Coronation Street cast: Georgia May Foote hits back on Twitter at claims by Marc Anwar | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

The former Coronation Street actor, who played Sharif Nazir in the ITV soap between 2014 and 2016, hit out at his former colleague during a recent interview.

Opening up about working with former Weatherfield regular Georgia, the 62-year-old claimed she may have turned down a storyline which would have seen her fall in love with Zeedan Nazir.

However, ITV have strongly denied the claims, and the 27-year-old has now taken to Twitter to express her outrage at Marc’s comments.

Sharing a post with her 333,000 followers, she penned: “Again. Fake s**t stories. As an actress I would have jumped at the chance to play such a diverse storyline.

“This was not the reason behind me leaving the show I loved and cherished for five years.”

Express.co.uk contact a representative for Coronation Street, who stated: “Georgia May Foote did not refuse to do any storylines during her time on the show.’”

It came as Marc claimed that Georgia had been dropped from the show months after she reportedly turned down a storyline.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, he said: “The storyline was that he would then ask her to become a Muslim.

“But when that was put to her she declined. I don’t know what her reasons were.”

He continued: “But she was adamant she didn’t want to do that storyline. And so the response was, ‘OK, see you later.’

“They couldn’t just let her go, because they would have been forced to continue paying her.

“But she spent the rest of the year doing bit scenes here and there.”

However, a source has insisted there is “absolutely no truth in Marc’s claims”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the source added: “As an actress she would have absolutely relished such a role.”

The Strictly Come Dancing star made her first appearance on the cobbles back in 2010, before exiting Coronation Street five years later.

During her time in the ITV soap, the storylines of Georgia’s character Katy often revolved around her relationship with Chesney Brown (played by Sam Aston).

Katy later gave birth to their son, Joseph Brown, and had an affair with Ryan Connor (Sol Heras).

While the star’s last on-screen appearance on the soap was back in 2015, her character was killed off off-screen two years later.

It came just days after Georgia was forced to clear up rumours about her love life on social media after she was reported to be dating Love Island star Chris Hughes.

In a series of clips posted on her Instagram account, she told her 536,000 followers: “I am not dating anyone. At all. No one has ‘met my parents’ and I am well and truly single.”

Coronation Street continues tomorrow on ITV at 7.30pm.
