Mary (played by Patti Claire) arrived on Coronation Street over 10 years ago as the comical friend and possible love interest for Weatherfield’s most notorious gossip, Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden).
However, as the ITV soap character became more established, she took on more serious storyline such revealing her darkest secret she had a secret son, Jude Appleton (Paddy Wallace) who was taken away from her at birth.
On finding her son and building a relationship with him, Mary uncovered Jude had secrets of his own, leading to his exit and split from wife Angie Appleton (Victoria Ekanoye).
With Mary now busy working in the florist shop with close friend Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), the cobbles resident could find herself drawn into the drama regarding the factory collapse which will impact many of the soaps characters later this year.
New behind-the-scenes images posted by Coronation Street on their Twitter page yesterday offered a weak peak for fans of the shop of what they can expect in the coming weeks.
One such photo shows Mary actress Patti Claire, 42, having make-up applied on the forecourt of the Underworld factory with an ambulance and paramedics in hardhats seen in the background.
The image has led some fans to believe Mary will be the unwilling victim, with one viewer replying to the post: “I hope Mary doesn’t die.”
Although Mary doesn’t work at the factory or would have any need to be in the vicinity, her latest plot could find her in grave danger.
In the coming weeks, Mary will find herself at the heart of a storyline with street mechanic Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) as she begins to spend more time with the father, offering him child care support in the absence of his wife Fiz Brown (Jenny McAlpine) and grandmother Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman).
Although it starts out as an innocent favour, Mary will become a familiar face in the Dobbs household, with Tyrone’s boss Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) warning him the nanny could be developing feelings for him.
Tyrone dismisses the suggestion, but when the mechanic receives a Valentine’s Card from a mystery admirer, he believes Mary could be falling for him.
If it is revealed Mary has developed a crush on the mechanic, she could find herself trying to fight fro his attention when Fiz returns to the cobbles, having been in Birmingham for the past few months to seek help for her daughter Hope Stape’s (Isabella Flanagan) worrying behaviour.
Trying to spend some more time with Tyrone, Mary could resort to making real visits to the garage where he works, which shares the forecourt with the factory.
However, if Tyrone knocks back her advances and leaves her heartbroken, Mary could hide away in the factory to wollow in her sorrow.
Viewers will have to wait until later in the spring to find out if Mary is the unwilling victim to succumb to the malicious intentions of the street’s new super villain, who causes the factory disaster.
