After its initial trailer got overshadowed by more exciting spots on Super Bowl Sunday, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” has released a new clip that’s long on major action scenes. In it, Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) jumps out of a skyscraper window and an airplane, falls off a cliff and crashes a motorcycle and a helicopter.
This is all in service of a mission that takes place following an escape by the terrorist Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), the villain from the franchise’s most recent installment, “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” (2015). Like that film, “Fallout” was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
Many actors from earlier “M:I” movies return, including Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson. Michelle Monaghan also reprises her role as Hunt’s wife, although an explosive scene in the trailer indicates their marriage may not be long-lived. The highest-profile new cast members include Angela Bassett as a C.I.A. official and Henry Cavill (a.k.a. Superman) as an American government assassin with a license to kill Hunt if he goes rogue.
“What’s done is done when we say it’s done,” Ethan Hunt declares. Whether or not the “Mission: Impossible” movie series is done will be determined when “Fallout” lands in theaters on July 27.
