Nicole Kidman Opens Up About ‘Massive Grief’ After Pregnancy Loss

It’s been more than 25 years since Nicole Kidman had an ectopic pregnancy, but it seems that the pain is still just as raw.

In a heart-wrenching interview with British society magazine Tatler, the mother of four opened up about the grief she felt after losing her first child at age 23, and why she feels the devastating topic is still treated as taboo.

Kidman, now 50, was newly married to first husband Tom Cruise when she learned her pregnancy was ectopic, which is when a fertilized egg is implanted outside the womb. A second pregnancy near the end of the couple’s marriage resulted in a miscarriage.

“I know the yearning,” the Australian actress told the magazine. “That yearning. It’s a huge, aching yearning. And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women.”

Kidman and Cruise — who were married for 10 years — ended up adopting their now-grown kids, Isabella and Connor Cruise.

Kidman, pictured in 1991, was married to actor Tom Cruise when she experienced both pregnancy losses.

The former couple are parents to Connor and Isabella Cruise, seen here in 1996.

“There’s an enormous amount of pain and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it,” she said, describing the feeling of finally becoming a parent. “The flip side of going through so much yearning and pain to get there is the feeling of ‘Ahhhh!’ when you have the child.”

After splitting from Cruise and marrying country singer Keith Urban in 2006, the actress went on to have two daughters, Sunday Rose, 9, and Faith Margaret, 7. Faith was born via a surrogate.

Kidman has since had two daughters with second husband Keith Urban.
