What is The Interrogation of Tony Martin on Channel 4 about?
The Interrogation is a verbatim drama.
This means every single word is spoken in the hour-long film is sourced from the original police interviews.
The entirety of the film takes place in a small interview room, apart from a real-life twist in the final minutes.
The Interrogation is about the case of Tony Martin who fired his shotgun at two burglars in his home at Bleak House, Smeeth Road in Norfolk.
The suspected burglars were 29-year-old Brendon Fearon and 16-year-old Fred Barras.
The body of Barras was found on Martin’s property and he was arrested on suspicion of murder.
In the end, Martin was found guilty of murder but his life sentence was reduced to manslaughter on an appeal.
He served three years of the sentence and was released in 2003.
The case divided the British public over the issue of self-defence.
A snippet of the official synopsis reads: “Martin, who had been plagued by burglaries and had lost faith in the police, blasted his shotgun as the thieves attempted to flee through a window. But when teenager Barras was found dead Martin’s actions divided public opinion.
“Was he a vulnerable farmer using reasonable force to protect himself and his property or a reckless vigilante, ready and willing to kill?
“The police interviews are the missing part of a story that split the country and generated hundreds of newspaper headlines.”
