Woman alleges cyclist run over and killed by husband assaulted her

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) A woman in Hualien City alleges a cyclist she witnessed her husband run over and kill in a traffic accident early Monday had only moments earlier sexually assaulted her.

The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, when a man surnamed Ho (何) ran over the deceased, while talking to his wife on the phone, Hualien County Police Department said.

According to the police, Ho said he was talking to his wife on the phone and trying to find her after the two had an argument earlier in the evening.

The cyclist was a migrant worker from Thailand, who suffered multiple fractures and was subsequently pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Based on the results of a breathalyzer test, police said the driver was found to be sober at the time of the incident, while samples taken from the victim’s blood showed traces of alcohol.

The case has been handed over to prosecutors for further investigation and police said Ho could be charged with negligent homicide.

However, the Hualien police would not comment on the alleged sexual assault, except to say that phone records confirm the husband and wife were talking to each other prior to the incident.

According to the police, Ho’s wife claims a man groped her when she was walking near Meilun Industrial Park in the early hours of Monday.

The attack continued but she broke free and immediately called her husband for help, police said.

It was only after the traffic accident, which she witnessed, that the woman realized the dead man was the same person who moments earlier had assaulted her, she said in a statement to police.
