President Moon Jae-in has canceled his summer vacation this week as the country has been pounded by torrential rains and many regions have been inundated, Cheong Wa Dae said Monday.
Moon came back to Cheong Wa Dae three days after he went to his private home in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province. Cheong Wa Dae said he made the decision as flood damage devastated particularly central parts of the country under the influence of typhoon Hagupit.
Cheong Wa Dae’s spokesman Yoon Jae-kwan said, “No decision has been made yet when he’ll leave on vacation again.”
After receiving briefings on flood damage, Moon told officials to “give top priority to minimizing casualties and implementing safety controls.”
“People’s safety must come before anything else,” he said. “The central and local governments should do their best to prevent further casualties.”
He also urged people to be cautious and check disaster updates regularly.
