U.S. Open Round 1 Top Story Lines
• The story of Day 1 may be the fescue. The U.S.G.A. brought in nearly 200,000 square feet of the tall grass to surround the fairways that were widened after 2004. And players are finding that it is best to steer clear.
• The “Super Group” of Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy is not living up to its billing. The trio combined for nine bogeys, three double-bogeys and only one birdie through eight holes.
• McIlroy had an embarrassing misfire out of a bunker on the 16th; the ball hit the lip and bounced straight up in the air.
• Looking for his first major title, Charley Hoffman (-1) got off to an early lead with two birdies in his first four holes. But he also didn’t have to deal with all the early-morning traffic getting in. He’s staying in an RV this week parked within walking distance of the course.
